Urgent Message from Hammoud Hospital UMC - August 17th, 2006
The rebuilding and the dream of Lebanon ended on the morning of July 12, 2006. Lebanon has been subjected
to an immense amount of destruction especially to its infrastructure.
While precise estimates are difficult to obtain, so far around 1,183 lives have been lost, 4,054 have been injured,
and nearly 1,000,000 people have been displaced (over 30% of the Lebanese
population). A humanitarian crisis is looming over Lebanon as the living conditions, particularly in South Lebanon, are worsening
with the unavailability of food, shelter, or medicine for inhabitants and refugees alike. There are numerous health hazards
including the spread of communicable diseases.
This crisis has been labeled the worst “humanitarian disaster” of the past 50 years of Lebanon’s history; the majority of the
deceased and injured are children and women. A growing number of injured patients are brought to our hospital from bombarded
areas, as well as transferred from southern hospitals that lack manpower and basic resources. To date, HHUMC has treated around
125 severely injured patients. These patients required immediate and multiple surgeries in the brain, abdomen and extremities
and most suffer from lower and upper extremity amputations. In addition to their traumas, most patients have sustained large
and complicated wounds necessitating multiple surgeries. There are daily arrivals of individuals in complete shock, with loss of
the ability to speak, and we have not been able to identify them. There are a few burn cases and because rescue workers were not
able to reach hard hit areas, we are getting a lot of dead on arrival cases.
Amidst this turmoil, over 100,000 women, children and elderly have sought refuge in Saida (home to HHUMC). This is an enormous
number of refugees as it amounts to twice the population of Saida and is being housed in schools, shelters, community centers
and sports facilities, lacking adequate sanitary system. There is an eminent danger of the spread of communicable diseases
and the hospital has actually started receiving such cases.
The hospital is stretched to its capacity and resources are limited. Moreover, since the beginning of the crisis, the hospital has
no direct income and hence could not stock-up on the essentials such as basic medicines, medical supplies, food, and cleaning materials.
In addition to the 300 patients currently receiving care, the hospital is also housing a large number of its staff members and
their families. These include residents, nurses, attending physicians and service department staff members.
In order to deal with daily power shortages, we have been mainly depending on emergency electric generators, but our fuel
reserves are running short as a result of an air and sea blockade that have depleted most of the country’s fuel reserves.
In response to may calls of support and in order for HHUMC to continue extending its badly needed services to South Lebanon,
we are launching a relief and support campaign and ask everyone to contribute. We welcome your donations to our bank
accounts based in Europe, the USA and Lebanon; for your convenience detailed information are provided below.
Your support in this crisis is greatly appreciated and should you donate, we will make sure to provide you with detailed information
on how your help was utilized. For questions, comments or material support please send an email to relief@hammoudhospital.com
